Q: I hear of groups being labled "conservative," "liberal," "fundatmentalist," "moderate." How would you classify your Convention in regard to these various labels?

A: Thank you for your question; I wish it were easier to answer. All of these labels tend to be used in a relative, subjective way. For example, any individual who considers himself or herself as “conservative” will tend to think of anyone to the left of his/her position as “liberal” and anyone to the right of that position as “fundamentalist.” Even in specific categories many extremes exist so that there are “left-wing fundamentalists,” “right-wing fundamentalists,” etc. The dean of a divinity school of a prestigious university informed me some years ago that he considered any Baptist really a “fundamentalist.” Of course, that reflected his own position and not of his denomination.
In short, the BGCM steers away from such labels. You make look at our core values on this website, which in the broad sweep of theology would be considered “conservative” by anyone’s measuring stick. However, we refuse to use such labels and to subscribe to man-made documents or creeds. Our focus is firmly fixed on the Bible and to the best of our ability under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we are attempting to adhere to biblical principles. Perhaps the best policy for all of us would be to avoid descriptions that tend to be critical of others and rather to concentrate on the task that is ours, being grateful for any who are preaching the gospel regardless of their human label.
    H. K. Neely, Former Executive Director, BGCM

Q: Is the Baptist General Convention of Missouri considering offering a health insurance and retirement program for church staff members?

A: Yes, the BGCM currently has a comprehensive health insurance program through the Ministers and Missionaries Benefit Board. It is available to any Baptist pastor or staff member. We also have a variety of qualified 403(b) retirement programs. Check out the information under "Ministry Resources" on our web site or contact our offices for more information. Jim Hill, Executive Director
